ACL Manchester Annual Costs Conference 2024

Event Description

This year’s ACL Manchester Costs Conference, will be held at the Lowry Theatre, Salford Quays.

Following the introduction of fixed recoverable costs in October 2023, further fixed costs extensions are on the horizon for 2024, including claims made under Part 8. Many practitioners are also waiting patiently for the appeal to be heard in Hadley v Pryzbylo regarding the recoverability of case management costs. As Costs Lawyers, we must stay ahead of these changes, understanding not only the impact they will have but embracing change for future development and learning.

The ACL Conference is your opportunity to hear from a range of accomplished speakers on topics which continue to influence the work and future of our profession and to network with one another.

We are delighted to have Dr Victoria McCloud joining us as our Keynote speaker this year, who will also sit on our Q&A Panel and award our newly-qualified Costs Lawyers with their certificates.

New – Breakout Sessions

Following the success at the London Conference, we are delighted to introduce to the schedule a choice of breakout sessions:

  • Simon Williams (Legal Ombudsman) – Client Care Letters: an ombudsman’s perspective on estimates, deductions and informed consent
  • Solicitor / Client Costs Special Interest Group – Alicia Tew (Hailsham Chambers) – Are you ready to run the gauntlet in beneficiary assessments under section 71(3)?
  • Paul Hughes (Kings Chambers) – Wasted Costs, Key issues to consider when making and defending applications

This is a great opportunity for non-members of the Association to take advantage of our connections and community.  These sessions will run for 30 minutes before we break for lunch.

The day is packed with a host of eminent speakers to inform, enlighten and entertain you; as ever, it will end with our popular Q & A panel.

Our confirmed conference speakers are:

  • Keynote address by Dr Victoria McCloud
  • Dominic Regan
  • Tom Mason – Hailsham Chambers
  • Toby Brown – Access to Justice Foundation

  • Matthew Smith – Kings Chambers
  • Victoria Morrison-Hughes – Integral Legal Costs / ACL Council
