Council Member to Join the CPRC

Ian Curtis-Nye has become a member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee (CPRC), making him what is thought to be the first Costs Lawyer to sit on it.

The Lord Chancellor, Dominic Raab, approved his appointment as a member for three years from 24 October, after consulting the Lord Chief Justice and the Law Society.

There is no designated place on the CPRC – the statutory body that governs the practice and procedure to be followed in the civil courts – for Costs Lawyers and Mr Curtis-Nye has been appointed as one of two members to represent the interests of the lay advice sector and consumer affairs.

Mr Curtis-Nye is a partner and divisional manager at the well-known law firm Lyons Davidson, with overall responsibility for the injury division and costs teams and will resign from the ACL Council as a result to ensure there is no conflict with the role on the CPRC.

He said: “I have always taken a keen interest in the work of the CPRC and I am grateful for the opportunity to become a member of the committee, representing consumer affairs and the lay advice sector.  I look to bring my experience in the industry with Lyons Davidson and working as a trustee for Citizens Advice Reading to the role and I am excited about getting involved and the work ahead.”

ACL chair Jack Ridgway said: “Ian’s appointment to the CPRC is very good news for civil justice. As a representative of the lay advice sector and consumers, his knowledge and experience of legal costs will surely prove very valuable at a time when the committee is considering many significant issues, such as fixed costs. I am sad to lose him from the ACL Council but am pleased that he is leaving for such a good reason.”
