Five minutes of your time

With the national conference coming up tomorrow, the ACL is running its survey of the current state of the profession and members are invited to take part. It will only take five minutes and can be found here.

It is completely anonymous and the results will be used to inform policy and in ACL publicity. Thank you in advance.

Time for the ACL to evolve?

Ahead of Saturday’s debate at the conference on the ACL’s future direction, Mark Thomas, co-founder of Liverpool firm Evolution Costs, has published a series of ideas for discussion, including corporate membership for firms, accreditation and an online training school. It can be read here, with more detail here.

Barrett’s back

James Barrett (pictured), former vice-chairman of the ACL, has joined Eversheds Sutherland as senior Costs Lawyer. He moves from Lampton 360, a business set up by the London Borough of Hounslow’s to trade local authority functions for profit, where he was business manager. He was formerly head of costs at the Government Legal Department and subsequently worked at Practico.

Glenn Newberry, head of costs at Eversheds Sutherland, said: “James brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the public and private sectors covering statute and common law and having advised on a variety of challenging and high-profile cases.”

Friston joins Hailsham Chambers

Leading costs barrister and ACL Fellow Dr Mark Friston has joined Hailsham Chambers as a tenant. Formerly of Kings Chambers, he is the author of the renowned textbook that will be renamed as Friston on Costs when next year’s third edition is published.

Andrew Post QC, head of Hailsham’s costs group, said: “We have long considered Mark to be one of the outstanding costs specialists in practice at the Bar. He will make a wonderful addition to the team.”
