Costs specialist joins CJC

Nicola Critchley, a partner and head of costs at leading defendant firm Horwich Farrelly, has been named as the new insurance member of the Civil Justice Council. The solicitor founded the costs department in 2001, which claims now to be the largest dedicated team of its type, having dealt with more than 525,000 costs matters in the past decade.

She said: “I believe my extensive experience in costs will be a great asset to the council, providing a unique insight into the issues facing the industry.”

Orlando Fraser QC has been appointed as a barrister member of the council, Kay Carberry CBE as an employee interest member, and His Honour Judge Barry Cotter as the circuit judge member. He is the designated civil judge for Devon and Cornwall.

Burcher Jennings heads east

Costs and pricing firm Burcher Jennings has continued its national expansion by opening an office in Cambridge. It will be headed by Costs Lawyer Richard Allen, who joined the firm earlier this year. This will be followed next month by a new office in Birmingham.

Martyn Jennings, CEO at Burcher Jennings, said: “East Anglia is a part of the UK that we have been looking to venture into for some time and the addition of the Cambridge office to the Burcher Jennings network will allow us to serve the region’s legal sector better than ever before.”
